During the Kombucha fermentation process, a biofilm forms on the surface of the liquid. This fungal growth is called Scoby (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast).
The fungus feeds on tea and sugar and converts into alcohol. It grows in various shapes and sizes, changes colour according to what kind of tea is added and once dried it is usually used as organic leather. In my flat, I am growing around ten different Scoby fungi.
I am reflecting on the different aspects of the material itself, and also in a self reflective way.
I take the position of a caretaker, such as feeding it, washing it and letting it grow. It is my silent roommate.
